Finding Comfort in the Present Moment (Mindful Monday)

Introduction:

When your body has pain, it's easy for your attention to get drawn to it. However, the present moment holds so much more than pain. This exercise, inspired by the affirmation "I choose to create a comforting present moment," helps you redirect your focus towards other experiences and find comfort in the here and now.

Exercise:

  1. Settle in: Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down. Gently close your eyes or lower your gaze. Take a few deep breaths, allowing your body to relax.

  2. Acknowledge the Pain: Briefly acknowledge any pain or discomfort you might be feeling. Notice where it is in your body and how it feels, but don't dwell on it.

  3. Redirect Your Attention: Now, gently shift your attention away from the pain. Explore your other senses. What can you hear? What can you smell? What can you touch? What can you see?

  4. Listen to Comforting Sounds: Listen to beautiful music or the sounds of nature.

  5. Notice What You See: If your eyes are open, watch birds fly by or notice the shapes and colors around you.

  6. Breathe Softly: Focus on your breath. Breathe softly and notice how each breath fills your body.

  7. Choose Your Focus: Silently repeat the affirmation, "I choose to create a comforting present moment." Feel the power of your choice to shift your focus.

  8. Deepen the experience: Take another moment to be grateful.

  9. Return: Gently bring your attention back to the room. Take a few deep breaths, and when you're ready, open your eyes. Carry this awareness of the present moment with you throughout your day.

Conclusion:

This exercise can help you find comfort and peace even when you're experiencing pain. By redirecting your attention to the richness of the present moment, you can create a more comforting and fulfilling experience.
