Step 2: Hope—The Emergence of the Healing Presence
Last week, we acknowledged the unmanageability of our internal system—the "tug-of-war" between our Managers (who try to control) and our Firefighters (who try to numb). Admitting this can leave us feeling raw. That’s why Step 2 is so vital.
In our re-imagined framework, Step 2 is: "We came to believe that a Healing Presence (Self-Energy) and a Higher Power could bring clarity and harmony to our internal system."
Beyond the Conflict: The Concept of "Self"
In IFS, we believe that at the core of every human being is a seat of consciousness called the Self. This Self cannot be corrupted by addiction, trauma, or shame. It is characterized by the 8 C’s: Calm, Curiosity, Compassion, Confidence, Courage, Clarity, Connectedness, and Creativity.
For many in recovery, the "Power greater than ourselves" mentioned in traditional Step 2 is often found first in the discovery of this Self-Energy, which is then supported and amplified by a Higher Power.
Why Protectors Resist Hope
It’s important to realize that some of your parts might be skeptical of Step 2.
The Skeptic Part: Might say, "We've tried this before, and it didn't work."
The Manager Part: Might say, "If I stop controlling things and trust this 'Healing Presence,' everything will fall apart."
In this integrated approach, we don't argue with these parts. We acknowledge them. We tell them: "I hear your fear. It makes sense that you're protective. But I’m starting to notice a 'Pilot Light' that is bigger than the conflict, and I’m curious if it can help us."
Hope as Clarity and Harmony
Traditional Step 2 talks about being "restored to sanity." In IFS, we define "sanity" as Internal Harmony. It is the state where your parts no longer have to fight for survival because they trust the Self and the Higher Power to lead the system.
Hope is the "Coming to Believe" that you are not just a collection of "defects" or "addictions," but a beautiful internal family that can be led back to peace.
Reflecting for the Deep Dive:
Which of the 8 C's (Calm, Curiosity, Compassion, etc.) feels the most reachable for you today, even if it’s just a tiny bit?
How does your view of a "Higher Power" change if you see it as a force that helps your Self lead your parts, rather than a force that just fixes you from the outside?
Can you let your "Skeptic Part" know it’s okay to just be curious for now?
Mid-Week Mantra: "I am more than my struggle. There is a Healing Presence within me that knows the way to peace."
