Do you ever feel small, uncertain, or like the challenges in front of you are just too big? In those moments, our bodies often reflect those feelings. We might hunch our shoulders, cross our arms, and lower our gaze, unconsciously embodying a sense of powerlessness.
But what if you could intentionally use your body to tap into a feeling of inner strength and confidence? What if a simple shift in your posture could actually change how you feel?
As a somatic practitioner, I understand the profound connection between our physical body and our emotional state. Today, I want to guide you through a simple yet powerful somatic exercise inspired by the iconic "Wonder Woman" or "Superman" pose. We’ll call it the Super Hero Pose.
This isn’t about pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s about accessing and embodying the innate strength and resilience that already exists within you.
The Super Hero Pose: A Somatic Exercise for Inner Power
This exercise can be done almost anywhere, anytime you need a quick boost of confidence and groundedness.
Find Your Stance: Stand with your feet planted firmly on the ground, about shoulder-width apart. Feel the connection between the soles of your feet and the earth beneath you. Allow your weight to be evenly distributed.
Open Your Chest: Gently lift your chest and allow your shoulders to relax and drop down and back slightly. Imagine a string gently pulling your heart center forward and upward. Avoid forcing it; this should feel like a natural opening.
Place Your Hands on Your Hips: Now, place your hands firmly on your hips. You can have your fingers pointing forward or slightly backward, whichever feels most natural and stable for you. Feel the solid structure of your pelvis beneath your hands.
Lift Your Gaze (Optional): You can keep your gaze level or gently lift your chin slightly, as if you are looking confidently out at the world. This subtle upward tilt can further enhance the feeling of openness and assurance.
Hold and Breathe: Hold this Super Hero Pose for two full minutes. During this time, focus on your breath. Inhale deeply and exhale fully, noticing the rise and fall of your chest and belly. Allow your breath to be relaxed and natural.
Sense the Shifts: As you hold the pose, pay attention to what you notice in your body. You might feel a sense of stability in your legs, an opening and lightness in your chest, or a feeling of groundedness through your hands on your hips. You might also notice a subtle shift in your internal state – perhaps a reduction in feelings of anxiety or uncertainty, and a gentle emergence of confidence or inner strength.
Release with Awareness: After two minutes, gently release the pose. Shake out your arms and legs if it feels right. Take a moment to notice how you feel now compared to before you started.
Why This Works: The Power of Embodiment
While the initial research on significant hormonal changes from power posing has been debated, the core principle remains powerful: our bodies and minds are deeply interconnected.
Adopting the Super Hero Pose intentionally shifts your physical posture from one that might signal insecurity or vulnerability to one that embodies strength and openness. This physical shift sends signals to your brain:
Space and Expansion: Taking up more physical space is often associated with higher status and confidence in the animal kingdom and in human interactions. By expanding your posture, you are nonverbally communicating a sense of presence and assurance.
Openness vs. Closure: An open chest and relaxed shoulders physically counter the protective, closed-off posture we often adopt when feeling stressed or insecure. This openness can translate to a greater willingness to engage with challenges.
Grounding and Stability: Placing your hands firmly on your hips provides a physical anchor, a feeling of being grounded and in control.
Even if the hormonal effects are less pronounced than initially thought, the subjective experience of feeling more confident and powerful can have a real impact on your mindset and how you approach the world.
Try incorporating the Super Hero Pose into your daily routine. Do it before a challenging meeting, when you’re feeling overwhelmed, or simply as a way to connect with your inner strength. Just two minutes can be a powerful reminder of your own resilience and capability.
Unleash your inner super hero – your body knows the way.
