Q & A Friday: Integrated Healing

Welcome to Q & A Friday, where we take a closer look at the concepts and exercises we’ve explored this week. After our discussions on "parts" and the "Choice Point," a common question that comes up is:

Q: Why does it feel like I can be moving through my day without any thought and suddenly I am craving my addiction, and it feels like I am overwhelmed in seconds? Why does it feel like it comes on fast like being hit by lightning?


This is an excellent and very common question. That feeling of being "hit by lightning" is a profound description of how our bodies and nervous systems work. It points to the fact that this process isn't a failure of willpower or logical thought. It's an automatic, lightning-fast response of your Protector Part.


Think back to the Mindful & Somatic Monday post, where we discussed tuning into the physical sensations of your inner parts. We also talked on Integrated Wednesdays about how your Protector Part operates to shield a vulnerable part of you from pain. Because this process is about protection and survival, it happens on a subconscious level, bypassing your logical, thinking mind.


This is because your nervous system has created a deeply grooved, automatic pathway. A trigger—which could be a person, a place, a feeling of boredom, or a subtle physical sensation—acts as a signal. Your Protector Part, having learned from repeated experience, immediately activates this superhighway, connecting the trigger directly to the impulsive, addictive behavior. It’s a rapid-fire sequence that feels out of your control because it operates in the older, more primitive parts of your brain.


The key to shifting this pattern is not to fight the craving but to intentionally build a new pathway. By practicing the somatic awareness we discussed, you learn to gently create a tiny bit of space in that automatic sequence. This moment of pause is your Choice Point, where you can begin to offer your Protector Part a new, more effective tool to help you—a small action that aligns with your values.


Remember to be compassionate with yourself. The goal is not perfection, but to gradually widen that moment of choice, one mindful breath and one value-driven action at a time. The powerful "lightning strike" of a craving will not simply disappear, but as you practice, you will notice the ability to witness it without being swept away by it.
